We are in Rowena, at exit 76 off Interstate 84, 76 miles east of Portland. Hood River is at exist 64 on I 84. Mosier is at exit 70 and The Dalles commences at exit 82.

Where do I eat?

Your accommodation has a fully equipped kitchen. Hood River has many restaurants.
The Dalles has 24 hour supermarkets.

What do I do for windsurf gear?

Bring your own or rent in Hood River.

How is it at your place for a family?

Our setting is great for families. We have three secluded acres with a beautiful, scenic yard that is sheltered from the wind. We have a private beach and ample on-site storage for your windsurf or kite gear. One of you can sail while the other plays with the kids in the yard or one can leave with the car while the other sails with on-site access to all of their sports gear and a hot shower and food!

Can we bring our dog?

We have two small dogs. Some of our neighbors have friendly dogs. Friendly, quiet dogs whose owners clean up after them are welcome. Aggressive dogs that dig up yards or bark or bother our neighbors are not welcome.

Can we invite guests:

To preserve the serenity of our setting, we ask that you arrange with us in advance prior to inviting any guests.

How’s the biking?

Rowena has world class road biking with endless miles of flat and hilly country roads free of traffic lights. Great mountain biking exists nearby. The Dalles and Hood River have fantastic bike shops.

Can we check in early or stay late?

This may be possible by prior arrangement. Our general policy is check in at 3 pm on Saturday and check out at noon on the following Saturday. By choice, we do not rent our guesthouse every week, so we may be able to accommodate your special request.

Will anyone else be onsite?

Our property has our house and our guesthouse. Our house is approximately 100 feet from our guesthouse and in between our guesthouse and the Columbia River. We are typically in our Rowena house 3 to 4 days each week and we are in Portland the remainder of the week.

Is there internet access and TV?

Our guesthouse has a high speed wireless internet connection and cable TV.
Please bring your own cell phone.

How’s the wind?

Some days are windless. Some days have blasting wind. Most days are somewhere in between. The wind typically comes in cycles lasting one to five days with one or two day interludes in between.

How’s the windsurfing and kiting?

Rowena has full on Gorge Wind and much calmer water than the Gorge’s wildest sites. Doug’s Beach West is approximately 1.25 miles down wind with some of the best swells in The Gorge. It is an easy downwind sail and the current helps you return. Note:  When the wind is marginally out of the South, Doug’s Beach is considerably windier than Rowena. When the wind is marginally out of the North, Rowena is considerably windier than Doug’s Beach. This is due to the topography. Plan accordingly when sailing or kiting downwind.

What about babysitting?

We have a 9 year old boy and 13 and 16 year old daughters who love to baby sit!

Do I need a car?

Yes.

How do I get there?

Fly to Portland or Drive. Take I 84 to exit 76 “Rowena.”  Cross the RR tracks and turn right on Rowena River Road. Our address is: 6005 Rowena River Road.

What are your accommodations like?

We have clean and comfortable accommodations in a magnificent setting. We have four bedrooms with 3.5 bathrooms, a decently equipped kitchen and dining area and a living room with a TV. One room has a king sized bed, one has a double and two have two twin beds. We supply towels and sheets.

Who are you?

We are Lucy & Joe Field. We have owned this property since May, 1987. In the late 1980’s through the late 1990’s, we did more intense rentals with rigged windsurf gear under the name Lucy & Joe’s Gorge and Heavy Air Gorge. We now live in Portland, Oregon where Joe is an attorney and bike racer and Lucy rides horses. We have a 9 year old boy and girls aged 13 & 16. Joe still loves to windsurf but has never tried kiting. Our kids love all sorts of Gorge sports activities.

What’s the best time of year to come?

Mid-June through mid-August. The River is warmer later in the summer. Hood River is quieter in June and September than in July or August.
